In 2022, global governance has an "Asian moment": in the first half of the year, China hosted the BRICS leaders' meeting; in the second half of the year, Indonesia will host the Group of 20 (G20) leaders' summit. Both China and Indonesia are developing countries that play a relatively important role in the world, both are in the similar development stages, have common interests and with shared development philosophies and tied destinies.
In recent years, under the joint efforts of the two heads of each state, China-Indonesia relations have flourished, demonstrating strong resilience and vitality. In July 2022, Indonesian President Joko visited China. He is the first foreign head of state to do so since the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, and China was also the first stop on President Joko's first trip to East Asia since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. This fully reflects both China and Indonesia highly value the relationship between two countries. During the visit, the two heads of state agreed to establish the general direction of building a community of shared destiny between China and Indonesia, and to build a model of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation among large developing countries. Both China and Indonesia are determined to become an example of common development and a pioneer of South-South cooperation, echoing the common voice of the two peoples and meeting their universal expectations. The two sides will continue to deepen the new pattern of bilateral relations with the "four-wheel drive", which includes political, economic, humanities and maritime cooperation under the leadership of building a community of shared destiny, which will promote the new and greater development of China-Indonesia relations.
In the coming period, pursuing high-quality development is China’s overarching task, and China will also accelerate efforts to foster a new pattern of development that is focused on the domestic economy and features positive interplay between domestic and international economic flows. These mean that China will continue to promote a high level of opening up to the outside world and push forward the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative. The future of China-Indonesia relations will continue to benefit from this and shall have new opportunities for development.
Promoting the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative will be the main focus of further deepening mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Indonesia. Since the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative, China and Indonesia have jointly worked on many projects, including the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, the "Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridor" and so on. For example, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway is the first high-speed railroad in Indonesia and even in the whole Southeast Asia, which is also a landmark project of the Belt and Road construction and practical cooperation between China and Indonesia. Around the advancement of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project, not only the leaders of the two countries are personally concerned, but also the competent departments of the two countries are coordinating to strengthen the cooperation, and the participating enterprises of both sides have strengthened the in-depth exchange of technology as well as personnel, which has further brought the bilateral relationship between China and Indonesia closer. In November 2022, during the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia will showcase the results of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway construction to the outside world. This is a manifestation of the close relationship between China and Indonesia, and it also conveys to the world that win-win cooperation is the way towards future.
The main content of the high-quality Belt and Road Initiative is still the infrastructure construction. The continued advancement of projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway will not only significantly improve Indonesia's infrastructure coverage, but also bring more new economic growth points for the local service industry and service trade.
In addition, under the strategic guidance of promoting the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, China and Indonesia will keep deepening the integration of production and supply chains along with value chains, jointly build a regional development plateau, and help the post-epidemic recovery of global economy. The two countries will strengthen upstream and downstream ties in electromechanical, digital, energy resources and other industries, continue to close trade and investment exchanges, and share development dividends in regionalized synergistic cooperation.
